The department was founded in 1966, on the opening of the Samarkand State Architecture and Construction Institute, under the name “Drawing, Painting and Sculpture”. Its heads have been S.M. Muxammedshin, V.V. Vanyakin, N.T. Sultonov, N.J. Kalonov, F.G. Yuldoshev, X.X. Jo‘rayev, D.Z. Saloxiddinova, T.H. Yorqulov and Sh.E. O‘rinboyev; since August 2023 it has been led by A.N. Sultanov.
Its first teachers — V. Redkin, G.S. Salaxov, N.Sh. Shaymuradov and V.V. Vanyakin — were invited by the institute's rector R.R. Abdurasulov; in the decades since, many of Uzbekistan's noted painters and sculptors have taught here.
Today the department counts 11 teaching staff — one professor (DSc), one associate professor, one PhD, one acting associate professor, two senior lecturers and five lecturers — plus one teaching assistant.
